It doesn’t take much to start the savings habit. But you have to start
somewhere. Luckily, there are lots of ways for kids to earn money…
if you’re willing to work for it. When you’ve worked to earn money, suddenly
it becomes a lot easier to save it, because you know how much effort it took to
earn your money in the first place. And
once you’ve started saving, you’ll discover that the money you’ve saved also
earns money for you…a lot faster than you might think.
Here are some ideas to get you started.
Become an entrepreneur!
It can be great fun starting your own business, especially
if it is something you love. Easy ways of getting started include:
- Mowing lawns or raking leaves for your neighbors
- Babysitting
- Walking or taking care of pets
- Sign up for a paper route
- Wash cars
- Tutor other kids in subjects at which you excel
- Teach adults how to use their computers or the Internet
Allowance
Help out your mom or dad by doing
the laundry, washing the dishes or vacuuming the house. Negotiate an allowance
and help your parents spend more time with you and less time doing household
chores.
Another easy idea is to collect
coupons or rebates for food or goods your family would like to purchase. Then
using the coupons and rebates do the shopping for your parents and keep the
money you’ve saved!
Enter contests
Enter essay or educational
contests that have cash or prizes for awards. First, check with your parents to
see if it’s okay for you to enter the contest. By winning the contest, you save
the money you would have spent on toys or games. Plus, by using your smarts to
win, you’re becoming a stronger individual.
